Fiji Watersports

With more than 330 islands completely surrounded by the blue waters of the South Pacific, one can only imagine how wonderful the world of watersports is in Fiji! If your idea of the perfect vacation includes diving, fishing, boating, snorkeling, water skiing, windsurfing, or jet skiing, the magnificent islands of Fiji should be one of your prime considerations when researching and booking your next holiday.

The only quandary you’ll face when arriving at Nadi Airport on the main island of Viti Levu is what to do first! Thankfully, many resorts and hotels offer excellent watersports and experienced outfitters organizing scuba diving tours, fishing excursions, sea kayaking trips, and other experiences that will help you explore the beautiful waters of this island nation.

Be sure to try ...

Diving – There are literally hundreds of dive adventures waiting for you in Fiji. One needn’t even leave the main island to enjoy more than two dozen scuba dive excursions. Specifically, the Coral Coast in the southern portion of Viti Levu is reputed to be one of the best diving locations in the world. Or take a short trip to the Mamanuca group of islands, where experienced divers can enjoy a thrilling shark dive. However, the island of Taveuni and nearby Matangi and Qamea Islands are, by far, the dream of every avid diver. Experts say you can dive here for decades and still only experience just a small portion of what’s under the water. Dives here are so diverse that you’ll have literally dozens from which to choose, suitable for a variety of skill levels. Other island groups in Fiji offer excellent dives as well. Contact an experienced dive shop for the best advice.

Fishing – Fiji is an avid angler’s paradise! The warm waters of the South Pacific are ripe with a variety of fish just waiting to be caught and prepared for the evening’s fare. Expect to catch giant tropical trevally (usually found near reefs and rocky islands), swordfish, marlins, sailfish, various types of mackerel, mahi-mahi, cod, and snapper. Enjoy a group fishing charter and make new friends with similar interests, or charter a private excursion for you and/or your family.

Boating/sailing – Cruising and charter operators are plentiful in the islands. Consider renting a private yacht and sail to the Yasawa Islands, film location for The Blue Lagoon. Sail with a guide and crew or, if you’re experienced, on your own. If you prefer, choose a pre-planned cruise to any of the island groups and tour in luxury, with all you need for a pleasant trip at your fingertips, including meals. Choose from one-day or multi-day cruises.

Whitewater Rafting – The Wainikoroiluva River provides an excellent location for a little whitewater fun. Usually referred to as the ‘Luva River, its shortened name, this river may not rival some of the wicked river runs of the world, but it provides some fine Class II and III rapids along with breathtaking scenery as it snakes its way through lush canyons.

Surfing – When the conditions are right, surfing in Fiji can be gnarly, dude! Travel to Tavarua, where you can experience such legendary surfing locales as “Restaurants” and “Cloudbreak” or head to the Coral Coast of the main island for something a bit calmer. Surf camps are abundant and offer guidance and instruction to both novice and experienced surfers.

Sea Kayaking – A growing sport in Fiji, sea kayaking allows one to experience the rugged beauty of the islands while enjoying leisurely time on the water. Guided kayaking trips are available in Taveuni, Vanua Levu, Kadavu and the Yasawa Group when whether permits. Many of the tours are multi-day and include unique cultural experiences and sightseeing opportunities.
