There are many different reasons to come to the South Pacific nation of Fiji, rich in history and culture and abounding with incredible natural beauty. But if achieving an adrenaline rush is your reason for visiting, you’ll be presented with a plethora of exhilarating, spine-tingling adventures that will keep you coming back for more. As a matter of fact, there are so many exciting activities to experience in Fiji, you’ll certainly need to visit more than once!
• Caving – If you’d like to start your trip with a “soft” adventure or if you’re traveling with children, caving is an excellent choice. Usually a day-long excursion, such tours generally lead to the caves of Naihehe, once the fortress of Fiji’s cannibal tribes. Besides magnificent stalactites and stalagmites, you’ll see plenty of Fijian history inside these dark spaces, including old cannibal ovens! The caves are easily accessible and there are no bats here to frighten you, but the trip is awesome for those seeking a little something out of the ordinary.
• Abseiling – Abseiling, in case you’re new to the adventure, is the process of descending a mountain or cliff face by means of a fixed rope. It can be a dangerous sport but invigorating as well, as long as you have a good guide and proper instruction. In Fiji, you can go abseiling at the Sleeping Giant Mountain Range, where there are walls for all levels of abseilers from not-so-high to gargantuan.
• Trekking – The diverse terrain of Fiji’s many islands allow for exciting trekking adventures. You might choose to spend some time exploring the Fijian rainforest or perhaps enjoy a multi-day trek in Koroyanitu National Park in the Mount Evan’s range, home to rare species of birds, breathtaking waterfalls, and some rather strenuous climbs.
• Hot Air Ballooning – Head to the Nausori Highlands for a magnificent ride towards the coast, floating as high as 6,000 feet in the air. Enjoy a champagne buffet at the end of this thrilling journey.
• Jet Boating – If you’ve never experienced the chills and thrills of a high-speed jet boat ride, get ready for some real adventure! The Nadi River is the ideal location for this excursion and the warm waters of Fiji provide the perfect conditions for a comfortable yet exciting ride. Your driver will maneuver you through lush mangrove forests and whisk you quickly around natural obstacles at speeds that will blow your mind. Amazing!
• Backpacking – “Roughing it” is really quite simple in the islands of Fiji. Virtually every inhabited island is home to at least a few backpacker hostels offering inexpensive accommodations for the night. Choose your island or island group according to your interest. For example, the main island of Viti Levu offers plenty of adventure, but if you’re looking for lots of company and a bit of a party atmosphere, head to the Mamanuca Islands group.
• Aerial Sightseeing – The most popular place to go “flightseeing” in Fiji is over the shallow waters of the Mamanuca Island group, where the water is so clear you can see the coral formations as you fly over. Tours of the Yasawa group are also plentiful or, if you prefer to explore the inland regions, plan a flight over the lush greenery of Nausori Highlands. Want a little extra excitement? Plan a skydiving lesson or, if you’re already experienced in skydiving, schedule a jump.
